How Do Collection Cups Compare to Wearable Pumps?

Collection cups are a great option for moms who want the convenience of hands-free, concealed pumping without needing to purchase a wearable pump. If you already own a Duo or Luna breastmilk collection cups are a great way to make pumping more convenient while still being effective! Many moms find that combining collection cups with a high-quality breast pump produces better results than they might get with a wearable option.

Are Collection Cups Suitable for Exclusive Pumpers?

While most moms find that pairing their collection cups with a high-quality pump gives them great results, many exclusive pumpers also incorporate their traditional flanges into their pumping routine.

This is because conventional flanges used with a traditional workhorse pump, like the Motif Luna, create the highest-performing and most effective setup you can get.

Tips for Pumping With Collection Cups

Pay special attention to assembly instructions

There is nothing worse than getting started on a pumping session only to realize your precious breast milk is leaking from the bottom of your cups. Once you have your duckbill valve and diaphragm in place, use the buckle design to get a secure seal. The audible “click” tells you you’ve done it right.

Check your flange size

Pumping with the wrong flange size typically leads to pain, reduced milk output, and even reduced milk supply over time. Most moms find that adding 0-3 mm to their nipple size results in a comfortable and effective flange fit.

Make sure your bra fits well

If your bra is too loose it can allow the cups to shift and lose suction. If your bra is too tight it can compress your breast tissue and cause inflammation. A snug fit that holds the cups in place, without smashing them into your breasts, is ideal.

Don’t forget to replace your parts

Duckbill valves and silicone diaphragms wear out when used. The more often you pump, the more often these parts will need to be replaced. Many moms who pump fewer than six times per day find that their duckbill valves and silicone diaphragms last about three months. Moms who exclusively pump or who pump more than six times per day often replace their parts every 4-8 weeks.

Whether you are making a list of baby shower registry items, shopping for your breastfeeding must-haves, or just starting to consider how to make pumping more convenient, Collection Cups are a great option.
