How to Get a Motif Medical Wearable Breast Pump Through Insurance

Step 1: Determine the Best Way to Spend Your Insurance Benefit

Great news! Motif Medical's newest wearable pump, the Motif Aura Glow, is fully covered by many insurance plans. Yes, you read that correctly—you can get the effective, high-quality Motif Aura Glow for free through insurance! And the hybrid-style Motif Roam is also typically covered at 100%! These two convenient, hands-free breast pumps are perfect for moms on the go.

In the past, wearable and portable breast pumps weren’t usually covered by insurance, or if they were, they came with a big extra cost. But now, Motif is changing that with the Motif Aura Glow and Roam. After listening to customer feedback on features, flange sizes, and portability, the Motif team designed these two pumps to meet all your needs while still being covered by insurance. So, how can you get the Motif Aura Glow or Roam through your insurance? Here’s how!

Step 1: Determine the Best Way to Spend Your Insurance Benefit

Wearable and portable pumps are great when using a traditional breast pump isn’t possible. However, a primary pump, like the Motif Luna breast pump, is still the best choice for ensuring effective milk removal. Think about your pumping needs. Will you need both a primary pump AND a wearable or portable pump for your breastfeeding journey? Or will you be fine with just a wearable or portable pump? If you need both, check the out-of-pocket cost for each and use your insurance benefits for the more expensive one. Also, keep in mind that portable and wearable pumps are eligible for HSA/FSA funds, and you can add your second pump to your baby shower registry!

Consider these tips when determining which type of pump(s) is best for you:

  • Exclusive Pumping - If you’re planning to exclusively pump, you definitely want to prioritize a primary option like the Motif Luna, but also consider the Aura Glow or Roam since you’ll likely have up to eight pumping sessions per day. Here is a sample schedule for incorporating a wearable/portable when exclusively pumping.
  • Pumping at Work - If you’ll be pumping 3 - 4 times per day at work, it’s recommended to have a primary pump to help support your milk production. Aura Glow or Roam can definitely fit into your schedule as well. Here is a sample schedule for using both a primary and wearable/portable option.
  • Occasional Pumping - If you plan to nurse your baby most of the time, except for occasional outings (like date nights or doctor appointments), you could go with either pump type. However, many people get better milk output with a primary pump. Thankfully, the Motif Roam is a hybrid that delivers excellent pumping effectiveness alongside the convenience of a portable pump with discreet collection cups
  • Pumping for Multiples or Preterm Baby - Similar to exclusive pumping, if you have multiples or a preterm baby, the safest choice is to use a primary pump (like the Motif Luna) and consider the Aura Glow or Roam when using your regular pump isn’t possible.

Which Features Matter Most to You?

  • The Motif Luna is a double-electric breast pump with a powerful motor that goes up to 280 mmHg of suction strength. It comes with traditional flanges and has separate cycle speed and vacuum controls for lots of customization. Luna is also available in a rechargeable battery-powered option.
  • The Motif Aura Glow is a premium wearable pump that also offers up to 280 mmHg of suction strength in a compact, lightweight design. Glow is named for its LED nightlights that shine down into the milk collection containers so you can see your pumped milk even in the middle of the night. Aura Glow also features two pre-programmed pumping modes that go beyond the standard massage mode and expression mode. Glow comes with 15mm/17mm/19mm/21mm silicone flange inserts right in the box.

  • The Motif Roam combines effectiveness and convenience with its strong motor and discreet collection cups. Just like Luna and Glow, it also provides up to 280 mmHg of suction strength. It’s simple to use and also features the same pre-programmed sessions as Aura Glow. Roam comes with 16mm/18mm/21mm/24mm silicone flange inserts right in the box.

Step 2: Insurance Lookup Tool

Motif Medical’s Insurance Lookup Tool helps you find Durable Medical Equipment (DME) providers that work with your insurance. This tool can help you find providers for items like maternity compression garments, pregnancy support bands, breastfeeding supplies, and breast pumps. Just enter a few details, and you’ll get a list of DMEs that will guide you through the process of getting your pump at no cost. Many DMEs also handle the paperwork to make sure you get your insurance-covered pump easily.

*Bonus Tip: Different DMEs carry different products, so don’t hesitate to shop around to find the one that offers what you’re looking for!

Step 3: Ask About Other Covered Items

Many moms don’t realize that their insurance plan covers other pregnancy and postpartum-related items! Just talk to your insurance provider or DME about what’s included in your benefits.

Many plans cover things like maternity compression items, postpartum recovery garments, maternity back braces, and more! Plus, many plans cover regular shipments of breast milk storage bags and replacement pump parts like breast shields, soft silicone inserts, collection cups, bottles, diaphragms, and valves.

*Bonus Tip: You can get covered items from different DMEs. For example, if the DME where you got your pump doesn’t offer breast milk storage bags, you can visit a different DME for those items.
