Everything to Know about the Motif Duo Double Electric Breast Pump

It is all about mobility and vacuum suction when it comes to pumping with the new Motif Duo. Pumping mothers need ease and accessibility to reach their goals, and the Motif Duo is the perfect pump for this! Weighing less than a pound, breastfeeding mothers can easily tote this pump around. The Duo also offers portability due to a long, rechargeable battery life between charging, up to 2.5 hours of total pumping time. Small, but mighty, the Duo fits in your cup holder, purse, diaper bag, desk drawer or even a pocket! When ready to pump hands-free, attach the lanyard around your neck, use the Motif Medical Hands-free Pumping Bra.

When selecting a breast pump, the key elements to look for healthwise are BPA-free pump parts and a motor with a closed system. The Duo is a closed-system breast pump, and includes BPA-free parts which is important because it means your milk is protected. Other essential Duo features include: quiet motor, 10 adjustable expression and massage levels, memory mode, and more!

A closed-system refers to the backflow system and the separation of airflow in the tubing from the flowing milk. This feature prevents contamination and mold growth within the system of your breast pump. All of these are equally important to the effective removal of milk. This keeps the milk supply and breast tissue healthy by quietly stimulating the tissue to contract out the milk (let-down) and maintain that stimulation. You can select to single- or double-pump, meaning pumping one or both breasts.

Motif Duo Breast Pump Design

Best for:

  • Pumping-on-the-go and in the car
  • Multitasking
  • Therapeutic pumping and relief
  • Travel

The Motif Duo is designed for pumping-on-the-go and when needed. For example, if you need to pump at work, out to eat, or at any time during your busy day! It also makes a great weekend travel pump. Depending on your baby's nursing pattern, you may need to pump every 3-4 hours when away from the baby or otherwise unable to breastfeed directly.

Pumping sessions typically last 10-15 minutes with this well-designed system. It also saves time with its Memory Mode, which records and recalls customized pumping sessions, such as the level for expression mode and massage mode.

The software includes three major features:

  1. Two pumping modes
  2. Frequency function
  3. Programmable memory function

Each feature has three levels to its function: base, secondary and advanced. So while the Duo is small, compact, and battery-powered, it is customizable and adaptable to varying needs or situations. In addition, the new memory feature makes frequent pumping less of a hassle.

How to Use the Motif Duo

Breast Pump Modes

First, sterilize and assemble your breast pump. Once you are ready to begin pumping, the easy-to-read backlit LCD screen will indicate what mode you are in. The massage mode will be indicated by a hand symbol. Use this feature to stimulate the let down response. Cycles should be slightly faster and vacuum levels lower, which can be adjusted to comfort level. This mode can take 3 minutes on average to get milk flow.

You can program the pump to switch from massage to expression mode, or manually do so by selecting the “mode” button. Once in expression mode, vacuum levels increase while cycles slow down. Adjust as needed with the “+” and “-” symbols.

Placing Breast Pump Flanges

Flanges, also known as breast shields, should be gently but firmly sealed on the breast(s) while pumping. Make sure to use the resources provided to determine the best size and fit. Also check out our guide to sizing your flange properly. This will ensure a vacuum seal, maximize breastmilk yield, and avoid problems stemming from a poor fit. These flanges will be sized in mm in relation to the diameter of the nipple. Manually trying on the fit is important, too, to see how elastic the nipples are and to ensure we are avoiding compressing the areola. The narrowest part of the flange should hit right at the base of the nipple, while giving plenty of room for movement.

Hands-Free Pumping

For hands-free pumping and added mobility, the Duo includes a lanyard. This will allow the pump to hang from the neck. You will also need a comfortable and supportive pumping bra. The bra should keep the flanges in place without slack. Prior to assembling your pump for use, fit the breast shields through the bra first and center on yourself, then attach the diaphragm, tubing, and finally the pump. Remove in reverse order when finished with the pumping session to avoid spills.
